Setup of Speakers

IMPORTANT SAFETY INSTRUCTIONS!

Please read the information below before you start using your new speaker.

WARNING:

THE SPEAKERS ARE NON-POWERED AND INTENDED TO BE USED WITH POWER AUDIO AMPLIFIERS. THE AMPLIFIERS MUST BE COMPATIBLE WITH 8 OHMS IMPEDANCE SPEAKERS.

We recommend the Acoustico speaker cable and tube amplifier for use with our speaker. The cable, amplifier, and speaker were designed for optimum audio performance.

WARNING:

DO NOT CONNECT SPEAKERS TO THE MAINS A.C. RECEPTACLES. IT WILL RESULT IN ELECTROCUTION AND FIRE!

WARNING:

THE SPEAKERS ARE DESIGNED FOR 30 WATT MAXIMUM INPUT POWER FROM POWER AUDIO AMPLIFIERS.

APPLYING POWER GREATER THAN 30 WATT WILL RESULT IN DAMAGE TO THE SPEAKERS!

WARNING:

BE CAREFUL TO NOT TOUCH THE DRIVER’S CONE OF THE SPEAKER WHILE INSTALLING FEET, SETTING UP THE SPEAKERS IN THE ROOM, AND CONNECTING THEM TO POWER AUDIO AMPLIFIERS.

Installation

The speaker comes equipped with four feet. Before setting up speakers in the listening space, these feet should be installed according to the following steps. Each step is accompanied with a corresponding picture shown below.

  1. Lay speaker on the side to expose threaded inserts on the bottom.
  2. Screw feet into each insert. Torque feet BY HAND until tight.
  3. Feet are installed.

The feet are sharp spikes. In order to preserve non-carpeted floors, protective disks (supplied with the speakers) should be used.

Any enclosed space is quite complex acoustically and the acoustical properties of the space have a profound effect on the system’s requirements and its performance. The objective of the setup shown in the diagram below is to place the listener on the major axis in the horizontal and vertical plane of our broad directivity speaker or in the area of the direct sound field. The distance from each speaker to the listener was selected to be shorter than the critical distance for a fairly low room constant. A small room constant indicates a very live room, a large room constant describes a room having a great deal of sound absorption. The smaller the room constant, the shorter the distance between the broad directivity speaker and the listener. The larger the room constant, the greater the distance.

The speakers are suggested to be placed on the floor, and positioned and oriented as shown in the diagram below. The speakers must be kept away from strong sunlight as UV may damage the driver’s cone structure. This is a very important consideration when positioning and orienting the speakers.

The driver’s cone is highly resonance sensitive so clean low distortion amplification and source components are advised. Due to high efficiency, the speaker requires modest power input from an amplifier to provide adequate sound levels for most rooms. The power levels of each speaker should be selected to create a musical image in front of the listener. The best performance can be achieved with an amplifier that has a flat frequency output. It minimizes the intermodulation distortion prevalent with full-range single driver speakers. Therefore, we recommend the Acoustico speaker cable and tube amplifier for use with our speaker. The cable, amplifier, and speaker were designed for optimum audio performance.

The picture below shows an example of Acoustico speakers and amplifiers installed in a typical living room.

The setup, outlined in this page, is just a starting point. Customers are encouraged to experiment with the power levels, orientation, and positioning of the speakers relative to the listener in their specific space to get the best sound reproduction.

Connections

We recommend Acoustico designed and manufactured speaker cable (included with the speaker) for connecting the speaker to the power audio amplifier (see picture below).

When connecting speakers to amplifiers, the polarities of speaker, cable, and amplifier output must match to avoid sound cancellations.
